A 45-Meter Pendant Light Narrates Memories of the Old Airport

Kai Tak Sports Park, transformed from the former north apron of Kai Tak Airport, stands as a new landmark in Hong Kong. As the city’s largest integrated sports and entertainment hub, this 28-hectare complex officially opened on March 1, 2025.
Nestled within this vibrant sports park, The Champion Bar, located on the second floor of the east lobby of Kai Tak Main Stadium, is an unmissable highlight. As one of Asia’s longest sports bars.

The Champion boasts a 100-meter double-sided bar counter, accommodating over 1,500 patrons. Designed by the internationally acclaimed Steve Leung Design Group, the bar adopts a “golden glory” theme, drawing inspiration from the old Kai Tak Airport. It incorporates nostalgic elements such as vintage flight information flap boards and distinctive striped glass, creating a space that is both contemporary and rich with historical resonance.

The true centerpiece of The Champion Bar is a 45-meter-long bespoke pendant light, meticulously crafted by Zodiac Lighting, suspended from the ceiling. This pendant light is not only a visual marvel but also harbors a hidden secret. Embedded within its design are Morse code symbols subtly encoding the geographic coordinates of the old Kai Tak Airport: 22°19’43.80”N 114°11’39.56”E, paying homage to the site’s storied past as Hong Kong’s aviation hub. The dots and dashes of Morse code are woven into the pendant light’s design, whispering echoes of the aircraft that once took off and landed, seamlessly blending the airport’s legacy with the modern energy of the bar.
This pendant light not only illuminates every corner of the bar but also serves as a bridge connecting the past and the future, allowing patrons to savor the unique historical essence of Kai Tak while enjoying drinks and camaraderie.
